Employers claim job applicants do not possess the full array of skills that make them viable employable candidates (Jaschik, 2015) and it is claimed in many fora, it is due to lack of soft skills. Professional development is an essential part of every individual’s career growth. However, many people often use the excuse of not having time for furthering their professional growth. This excuse leads stagnation of growth, both personally and professionally. Why?
Firstly, if you do not invest time in professional development, it can lead to stagnation in your career. During our talks with the youth especially young girls out of school, we have heard many girls choosing the simple or easy way out. Yeah, you have guessed it… getting married, seeking a rich man to pay for her monetary needs or turn to prostitution. In today’s fast-paced world, industries and technologies are evolving rapidly, and it is crucial to stay updated to remain relevant and competitive. Without continuous learning and upskilling, one’s skills can become outdated, limiting career opportunities and growth.
Secondly, in the work place many employees since the epidemic- COVID-19 who have not prioritized professional development, have missed out on better employment opportunities or even promotion, salary increases and ended up being part of the big statistic of unemployment. Many employers offer training programs and resources for their employees to enhance their skills. When an employee does not take advantage of these opportunities, they may lose their jobs.
Lastly, neglecting professional development can impact on your job satisfaction and overall happiness. Continuous learning and personal growth will give you a sense of purpose and fulfillment, leading to increased job satisfaction. On the other hand, feeling stuck in one’s career or lacking the necessary skills leads to frustration and dissatisfaction.
In conclusion, while it may be challenging to find time for professional development, neglecting it can cause other problems. It is essential to make it a priority and invest time and effort into continuous learning and skilling to ensure career growth and personal fulfillment.
