On February 28, 2025, I had the privilege of attending the Women in Insurance (WIN) – WIN@5 Convention, where women across all levels of the insurance sector came together to learn, connect, and be inspired by top female executives who have successfully navigated their leadership journeys.
Hearing from Hope Murera, Managing Director & CEO of ZEP-RE, alongside other powerhouse leaders like Ritah Mutesi Kabayiza (Executive Director, Willis Towers Watson), Susan Nsibiriwa (MD, Nation Media Group), Ruth Namuli (CEO, Sanlam General Insurance), and Rose Wanda (Secretary General & CEO, OESAI) was nothing short of transformational. Their leadership stories highlighted the critical soft skills that separate great leaders from the rest:
🔹 Resilience – Leadership demands the ability to bounce back from setbacks and keep moving forward, even when challenges arise.
🔹 Determination – Success doesn’t happen overnight; it requires persistence, strategic thinking, and a strong work ethic.
🔹 Courage – Making tough decisions and standing firm in your vision is a trait all thriving leaders must develop.
🔹 Emotional Intelligence – Understanding people, managing emotions, and leading with empathy are key differentiators in today’s competitive business landscape.
A particularly inspiring takeaway was from Aphwa Kawaase Sebyala, the founding chair of WIN. Her vision for women as key players in Uganda’s insurance industry has become a reality in just five years—a testament to visionary leadership, discipline, and the power of networks.
As shared during the convention, leadership is demanding. To sustain high performance, women leaders must:

✅ Engage in continuous learning, reading widely to stay ahead of industry trends.
✅ Build strong networks and mentorship circles to navigate leadership challenges.
